Walmart's Sweetest Gig: Cake Decorators are Highest Paid Hourly Workers

Forget climbing the corporate ladder – the sweetest path to a high-paying hourly job at Walmart might just be through the bakery aisle. The retail giant has revealed that cake decorators are among the highest-paid hourly associates in their U.S. stores, excluding management positions.
Earning an average of $19.25 per hour, these artistic employees bring creativity and deliciousness to life, adorning cakes and cupcakes for celebrations big and small. With over 6,000 decorators nationwide, Walmart is a major player in the cake decorating world, frosting over 150,000 cakes weekly, particularly during graduation season.
But it's not just about following recipes. The job entails ordering ingredients, utilizing edible image technology, and staying on top of the latest cake decorating trends. Walmart actively encourages its decorators to explore new ideas and showcase their talents.
Take Melissa Fernandez, a New Jersey-based Walmart decorator with 11 years under her belt. Her stunning cake designs have gone viral on TikTok, amassing nearly half a million views and showcasing the artistry possible within the company. Fernandez herself earns a sweet $24.40 per hour. "I love baking at home. I love painting," Fernandez said, highlighting the artistic fulfillment she finds in her role.
So, what does it take to join Walmart's team of cake artists? Aspiring decorators must be at least 18 years old and possess six months of experience in fresh food production. While prior cake decorating experience is a plus, it's not mandatory.
If you're looking for a career that combines creativity, deliciousness, and a competitive hourly wage, a cake decorating position at Walmart might be the perfect recipe for success. Openings are currently available in locations across the country, from Nevada and Arizona to Florida and New York.
